Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) is a depressive condition that is associated with lower levels of light and seasonal changes. About 3/4 of Seasonal Affective Disorder sufferers are women, although men and children can also be affected. Susceptibility to this condition may be inherited.
If you experience Seasonal Affective Disorder, you may be using antidepressant medication or seeing a psychotherapist. In addition to these strategies, exposure to bright light has been found to be an effective means of treating S.A.D.
This treatment involves an individual sitting in front of a bright light unit, which is a specialized box that contains balanced spectrum fluorescent tubes. The duration of exposure and the optimal time of day for exposure is based on each person’s individual needs for light therapy. Persons using a light box unit should meet periodically with their health care professional for monitoring and so that the dose of light therapy can be adjusted as needed.
